GRAND NATIONAL 2020

Grand Opening Day – Thursday 2nd April 2020

Grand Opening Day takes place on Thursday 2nd April and marks the first day of the 2020 Grand National, which culminates in the 172nd running of the Grand National on Saturday 4th April.

Ladies’ Day – Friday 3rd April 2020

Race day fashion is at its height at Aintree’s famous ladies’ day and provides a spectacle of glamour and colour as the Red Rum Garden transforms itself into the Style enclosure with prizes up for grabs for Aintree’s most stylish visitors.

The day’s big feature races include The Topham Steeple Chase and Melling Steeple Chase and complete an exciting adrenalin-fuelled Race card.

The Grand National Day – Saturday 4th April 2020

The eyes of the world turn to Aintree as forty of racing’s biggest stars take to the stage in front of an audience of millions in a bid to win the world’s greatest Steeple Chase.

The Aintree Racecourse is home of the Grand National steeplechase, one of the most famous races in the world. Steeplechasing at Aintree was introduced in 1836, though flat racing had taken place there for many years prior to this. The Grand National race is run over 4 miles 514 yards (6.907 km) after being re-measured by the BHA in 2015. The race is considered among the most demanding steeplechases in the world. The lead has often changed hands during the 494-yard (452 m) run-in after the final fence. There are usually 40 horses taking part in the race (this has been the maximum since 1984) but fewer than ten may actually complete the course: for example, 42 horses started in 1928, and only two reached the finishing post. The record for the most victories in the Grand National is held by Red Rum, who won three times in the 1970s, in addition to coming second twice.
