The Little Wine Bar, “A small wine bar with big hospitality.”

The Little Wine Bar

People meet people If you like to talk to new people, this wine bar is an excellent choice. It is an intimate setting with 7 tables and 4 seats at the bar, so you can easily have a chat with your neighbours in the bar.

The aim of the bar is: “I want my customers to feel like they are having a dinner at home with good friends or family, to have a nice conversation and enjoy a good glass of wine and a good meal”, says André De São Marcos who also explains that for the same reason he decided not to have wifi and music in his wine bar. “I think it is a way to give attention to the conversation and relationship between people”, he says.

The Old Pharmacy

The famous wine bar in Bairro Alto. You will definitely be cured at The Old Pharmacy! They have all sorts of medicine there with varieties of port wine, red wine, white wine … oh yes a lot of other drinks too.

DOCTORS ORDERS – YOU MUST GO TO THE OLD PHARMACY

This wine bar was formerly a pharmacy. They have tastefully retained the feeling of the past and have just replaced one kind of medicine for another! The old medicine cabinets from the past with glass doors remain and are now a part of the interior. The cabinets are full of bottles of wine from all over Portugal, instead of liquid aspirin and paracetamol.

At The Old Pharmacy they take service seriously, which was great fun for us as guests. The staff have a good banter with the guests, joking and having fun but at the same time they make sure that they are recommending the right wine for the food on the menu.

Vijay & Jorge provided fantastic service.

The Old Pharmacy is located at Rua Diario de Noticas 73-83, Bairro Alto, Lisbon.

Garrafeira Nacional was founded in 1927 by the Grandfather of the CEO, Jaime Vaz. Garrafeira Nacional have as reference Domaine de la Romaneé-Conti, a collection of Chateau Petrus and also Chateau Mouton Rothschild. The stores are unique and offer specific services to the customers.

Wine and dreams in Lisbon

It took five minutes and then all tables were taken and suddenly we went off to Brazil!

Madame Bacchus

Gilles and Amandine is the French couple who own the wine bar Madame Bacchus.

When you go to a wine bar you want a taste experience that is worth paying for. At Madame Bacchus, they deliver an overall experience with luxurious tapas and good wines and a family feeling that makes you feel happy.  We wanted to know more about the place and asked the waitress. It turned out that the musician in front of us playing guitar is her husband Gilles, and they own the place together. Gilles wife Amandine has also grown up with an eye for good food; no wonder the food, wine and music were fantastic.

Gilles lived in Brazil for several years and learned to speak Portuguese, so one day when they were sitting at home in Paris, they decided to unite their talents and move to Lisbon, and that was five years ago. They run Madame Bacchus as a family business with a genuine welcoming feeling and that is probably why you could feel that several of the visitors were regulars who go there for the wonderful atmosphere.

WEDNESDAY’S AND SUNDAY’S LIVE MUSIC SESSIONS

Gilles knows many of the musicians in town and usually invites some of them to join them on Wednesday’s and Sunday’s for live Brazilian music and jazz sessions.

The wine bar Madame Bacchus is located in a nice area in the center, if you want to visit Madame Bacchus the address is:

O RESERVA SPORTS BAR

If you want a new experience and like to watch football, go to O Reserva sports bar. Join the locals and share an exciting time, watching football teams from all over the world playing in the leagues.

O Reserva Sports Bar

The Restaurant and Sports Bar was founded by two partners, Diogo Felix and Alexandre Oliveira, who have both been working as chefs in the city for several years.

The concept of ‘O Reserva’ is that you as a customer are a member of the team who are playing, sitting on the bench as a reserve player, enjoying drinks and food. The bar is designed to make you feel like you are in a stadium, at the game. There is memorabilia throughout such as scarves and photographs that create a football stadium environment and atmosphere. Even the toilets in the bar are like those in a real stadium!

‘O Reserva’ comes from the term used in Brazil for the reserve or substitute player who sits on the edge of the field watching the match along with the coach and manager; their position is the best place to watch the game.

Several screens in the bar allow you to choose which game you would prefer to watch.  The concept is very effective and you really do feel like you are sitting on the sidelines watching the game!

However, if your team wins they cannot promise you a trophy, but what they can promise you is a very good time!

Chinese
Pavilion
bar

On entering the bar we were mesmerised. It was like walking into Aladdin’s cave.

Chinese Pavilion bar (Pavilhao Chines)

When we visited the bar for the first time, we stood at the door and rang the bell of one of the most famous bars in Lisbon. Surely this cannot be the Chinese Pavilion bar that everyone raves about? The door was opened by a young man in a uniform, black trousers and blue waistcoat, who escorted us to a table.

On entering the bar we were mesmerised. It was like walking into Aladdin’s cave. Every room is filled from floor to ceiling with toys, momentos, artefacts, drawings, pictures and  memorabilia dating back years, it is like going back in time, It is full of historical  charm. You could spend a week in the bar and still not see everything!

The place is like the Tardis from the Doctor Who series- it is huge inside. Who would have thought that the little door at the front of the building would open up into such a magnificent bar with five rooms?!

Every nook and cranny is full of jaw dropping knick knacks. Our necks were stretched as we looked around not only at the walls but also the ceilings; there is not a space in the place, every wall and ceiling displays something intriguing to look at. The Old Curiosity Shop from the Dickens novel came to mind as we were curious about every artefact in the place! Is it a bar or a museum?!

Even the menus are fascinating. They are a work of art in themselves, with sketches and photographs on each page. The bar specialises in cocktails and many an elegant lady can be seen enjoying one of the cocktails on offer from the extensive list.

Considering the walls and ceilings are busy with memorabilia, there is a calm, relaxing atmosphere to the bar. We felt privileged to be there, it was like a dream. Do we really have to wake up and come back to reality?  Each of the five rooms have tables and comfortable chairs on which to perch, in a games room there are two antique pool tables along with cues and chalk. Just like the rest of the artefacts, the pool tables are old, they have net bags below the holes for catching the balls that roll off the table.  I haven’t seen this type of table for years, my grandparents would love to bring back memories from years ago and play here.

It is such a quirky place, not only were we escorted inside but on leaving we were also escorted out! We didn’t want to leave but it was one o’ clock in the morning and we needed to sleep!

To say we were awe inspired with Chinese Pavilion is putting it mildly. This bar is unique and full of history, it is a must for every visitor to Lisbon. It cannot be missed. You will never forgive yourself if you don’t call in for a drink. One thing is for sure, once you have visited the bar you will definitely want to go again!

D. Afonso O Gordo

What a great atmosphere, the restaurant and the food are divine.

D. Afonso O Gordo

The restaurant has a wonderful ambiance. The decorations are beautiful and it even has an old well in the corner of the restaurant that has been carefully restored with old relics from the 17th Century.

The famous chef Fabio Gomes told me about the history of the restaurant and its premises:

After the great earthquake of 1775, Sebastiao Jose de Carvalho e Melo, The Marquis of Pombal (equivalent to a Prime Minister today) was responsible for the rebuilding of  Lisbon and within a year, Lisbon was already partially rebuilt. Right in the heart of Lisbon’s historic center, D. Afonso o Gordo is housed in a building that was designed in 1758. This historic structure was originally the private stable of the Marquis of Pombal.

Preserving the original walls of red brick, vaults and arches of the time, D. Afonso o Gordo opened its doors to the public in 2015 and is one of the best restaurants of traditional Portuguese gastronomy in Lisbon. The cuisine is traditional Portuguese with a modern touch. The specialty is Leitão à Moda da Bairrada (Roasted Suckling Pig Bairrada Style) one of the seven wonders of Portuguese gastronomy.

When we stepped in to the restaurant D. Afonso O Gordo we were shown to our table for the evening. What an incredible environment, the restaurant is huge but because of all the arches and special corners the restaurant feels intimate and gives you those romantic feelings when you are sitting with your partner. We were shown the menu and we chose the speciality of the house, Roasted Suckling Pig.

The waiter recommended the wine and this was served along with starters. The arrangement of the starters looked so beautiful and inviting. You could see from the plates that D. Afonso O Gordo is a special restaurant where perfection is important.

Fabio, the famous Chef came out to greet us and explained how the Roast Suckling Pig is cooked slowly for many hours. It just fell off our forks, it was so tender.

The Fado singers and musicians entertained us while we ate and drank.
